Step 1:

Heat oil in a large soup pot over medium heat. Add onion and jalapeño and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Step 2:

Add garlic, chili powder, and cumin and stir to cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

Step 3:

Add broth, water, and black beans and stir to combine. Cover soup and bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 4:

Puree half the soup in a blender or with an immersion blender, being careful when handling the hot liquid.

Step 5:

Add lime juice and season with salt and pepper. Top with tortilla strips and cilantro.
